About Al-Huda School
Introduction and background history of the cornerstone project of the Dar-us-Salaam Community
Al-Huda School, a full-time K-9th grade Islamic School Accredited by The Middle States Commission on Elementary Schools (CES-MSA) with over 390 students located in College Park, Maryland. Al-Huda School is actually two schools in one, a boys K-9th grade school and a girls K-9th grade school, each with their own classrooms and Muslim teachers, all under one roof. Of course both schools share the same Muslim administration. We also operate a licensed daycare/preschool which has over 80 students enrolled in the program as well as a full time Hifzh School (Qur'an memorization) school for boys and girls with close to 30 students enrolled.
History/Background:
With the growing decay of the public school system and the general decay of the moral and ethical standards of the American society in general, the need for Islamic schools has become readily apparent to almost all Muslims across the country. As a result, nearly every community from coast to coast has either opened up a full-time Islamic school, or is in the process of doing this. In the Baltimore-Washington DC metro area, there were only 2-3 Islamic schools 10 years ago; this number will soon surpass 10 by the end of this year. If we add to this, the fact that there are nearly a half million Muslims in the Baltimore-Washington DC metropolitan area, and well over 50,000 school age Muslim children, then it becomes very clear that even if we started another 20 schools we could not take care of all our children.
Al-Huda School was established over 12 years ago and has been growing at an astounding rate since that time. The school opened its doors in September 1995 with 26 students in K-2nd grade and by the 5th year, enrollment had climbed to over 300 students in K-7th grade. If we add to this our Daycare/Preschool and full-time Hifzh School enrollment, our student body exceeds 500 students. The quality of our staff has also dramatically improved over the years, which greatly improves our ability to garner support for the school from the community at large. The improvements in staff and facilities have also translated into a higher standard of education and learning for the students.
Alhamdulillah we have now added the 9th grade to our school. To view the state standards please visit the MSDE website.
