Qur'an Reading Camp 2008

For ages 5 and above. An environment that encourages Islamic learning and character building, while at the same time offers fun activities for our youth! June 23, 2008 - August 1, 2008

June 23 - August 1, 2008 (six weeks)

9 a.m. - 3.15 p.m. (Mon - Thu)

9 a.m. - 2.15 p.m. (Friday)

Purpose

The purpose of the Qur’an Summer Camp is to help students continue in their spiritual learning while at the same time enjoying their time off from school. Dar-us-Salaam aims to provide students with an Islamic learning environment that fosters fun and knowledge.

Classes

1.      Qur’an: This will be the main focus of the camp.  Students will spend approximately two to three hours in Qur’an Class.  Those students who cannot read Qur’an fluently will practice their reading skills with the teacher.  There are no pre-requisites for this class.  The class will be taught on a one-to-one basis.

Before the beginning of the camp, there will be a placement test where students will be placed in different levels based on their reading skills.  Placement tests will be conducted on 3 different days:

Wednesday, June 11:        4 p.m. – 8 p.m.
Saturday, June 14:          10 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Wednesday, June 18:        10 a.m. – 1 p.m.

2.    Memorization: This year we plan to provide inshaAllah a separate class for those students who can read fluently and want to memorize from the Qur’an.  Please see our Intensive Hifzh Camp 2008 Program.

3.    Qur’anic Arabic: Part of learning the Quran and enjoying it involves understanding its meaning. This year we have planned to add a class to teach the most frequent words of the Quran so that students can actually understand and enjoy what they are reading.

4.    Islamic Studies:  We realize that it is absolutely important for our students to not just read the Qur’an, but also to live it.  The Islamic Studies class will help our students know more about their Islamic heritage, and will help them learn more about their religion.  There will be one 45-minute period for Islamic Studies.  Topics covered in these classes will cover the Islamic creed (Aqeedah), Character Building, basic Fiqh, etc.

5.    Sports: We understand that summer is a time where children are very energetic, and want to do fun activities.  We hope that our Summer Camp will make this summer a very memorable summer for our beloved students.  We will have some or all of the following activities during the summer camp and more, Insha Allah:

I.    Basketball
II.    Soccer
III.    Football
IV.    Track
V.    Team Building

Field Trips

To combine theory with practice, and to make the experience enjoyable for our youth, we will conduct different field trips during the course of the camp that will help our students implement the wisdom that they learn during the Islamic Studies classes.  The field trips will be fun and exciting, and will help enhance the students’ Islamic understanding.

Typically, the field trips will take place on Wednesdays, though this date may change due to weather or scheduling reasons.  To enhance this experience, we would appreciate if each parent can commit to volunteer as a chaperone on at least one of the Wednesday.  We would also appreciate if the parents can offer their vans/cars to transport students to the field trips.  This will help reduce the costs of the field trips, make the trips safer for our students, and allow the parents to be closely involved in their child’s Islamic education.

Age Limit

Our minimum age limit is 5 years old.  There is no maximum age limit.  Boys and girls will be separated during the camp.

Class divisions and class sizes

The summer camp classes will be divided based on students’ ages and on their reading skills, which will be determined by the placement test.  Class size will be limited to 12 students per class.
